Lecturer in Conducting
Ryan S. Kelly serves as Assistant Director of Bands and Associate Director of the Longhorn Band at The University of Texas at Austin. As a faculty member in the Butler School of Music, Dr. Kelly conducts the Symphony Band, teaches courses in conducting and score study, serves as Director of Longhorn Music Camp, and is the faculty sponsor for the Alpha Tau chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Kelly was Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Central Florida, where his responsibilities included serving as Director of the Marching Knights, conducting the Symphonic Band, and teaching courses in music education. He has also previously served as Director of Bands at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida, and Lakeland High School in Lakeland, Florida.
A native of northern Virginia, Dr. Kelly received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Florida State University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from The University of Texas at Austin. His conducting teachers include Jerry Junkin, Robert Carnochan, and Richard Clary. Ensembles under Dr. Kelly’s direction have appeared at the 2009 Music for All/Bands of America National Concert Band Festival and the 2011 JanFest High School Band Festival at the University of Georgia.
Dr. Kelly has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Florida Music Educators Association, and has published articles in Research Perspectives in Music Education, Florida Music Director, and Southwestern Musician. His wind ensemble transcription of Kevin Puts’ Network is published by Aperto Press. Dr. Kelly’s professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association (where he currently chairs the Social Media committee), Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Tau Beta Sigma.
