Lecturer in Conducting
Ryan Kelly currently serves as Assistant Director of Bands and Associate Director of the Longhorn Band at The University of Texas at Austin. His teaching responsibilities include conducting the Symphony Band, and teaching courses in conducting, literature, and score study in the Butler School of Music. Dr. Kelly also serves as an undergraduate advisor for music majors, as faculty sponsor for the Alpha Tau chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, and as Director of Longhorn Music Camp, managing all aspects of the university’s annual summer music program serving over 1,100 students from across the country. Previously, Dr. Kelly was Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Central Florida, where he served as Director of the Marching Knights, conducted the Symphonic Band, and taught courses in music education.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Kelly maintains an active schedule as a clinician/conductor, adjudicator, and arranger. He conducts honor bands throughout the United States, and in the summer teaches on the faculty of the World Youth Wind Orchestra Project/World Adult Wind Orchestra Project as part of the Mid-Europe Festival in Schladming, Austria. Dr. Kelly is an advocate of new music, and frequently collaborates with composers to produce performances of new and emerging works for wind band. Most notably, he has collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts and Grammy-nominated composer Adam Schoenberg to transcribe, premiere, and publish their music for wind ensemble. Additionally, Dr. Kelly has presented at the state music conferences of Texas, Florida, and Ohio, and the biennial national conference of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA). He has published articles in Research Perspectives in Music Education, Florida Music Director, and Southwestern Musician.
A native of northern Virginia, Dr. Kelly received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Florida State University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from The University of Texas at Austin. Before teaching at the university level, Dr. Kelly was a high school band director for seven years in Lakeland and Tallahassee, Florida. During that time, ensembles under hisdirection were invited to perform at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival, and the JanFest High School Band Festival at the University of Georgia.
Dr. Kelly currently serves as chair of the Social Media committee for CBDNA, and has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Florida Music Educators Association. In addition to CBDNA, his professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Big 12 Band Directors Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, and BMI.
